讲座摘要:
With the increased penetration of renewable energy sources and ubiquitous power electronics apparatus, DC power is making a comeback. In the generation aspect, the PV, wind, and energy storage are inherently DC sources. For transmission, the HVDC has become the feasible solution for transmitting a large amount of power over long distance or submarine/underground cables. For distribution, the MVDC is more capable of accommodating a higher penetration of renewable energy and friendly to EV charging stations and Data centers. Therefore, DC system is of increasing interests in both academics and industries.
Nevertheless, as an analogy of line-frequency transformers in AC systems, DC system also requires such a device to exchange power between networks with different voltage levels. As a DC circuit does not satisfy the law of Electromagnetic Induction, it is not possible to use magnetic transformers to convert DC voltage directly without engagement of power electronics technology. Although the DC/DC power-electronic converters have been extensively studied and applied at low-power applications, scaling these topologies to tens or hundreds of kilovolts and megawatt power levels presents significant challenges related to loss, cost, dv/dt, and semiconductor ratings. To overcome these limitations, several novel high-power DC/DC converter topologies have been proposed and demonstrated during the last few years.
This tutorial systematically reviews the latest developments high-power DC/DC converter technologies. It begins with an introduction to the applications for high-power DC/DC converters, followed by a review of the basics and widely used converter solutions. The tutorial then delves into three main themes:
  1) DC/DC converters for interconnecting LVDC and MVDC systems: state-of-the-art dual-active bridge (DAB) and series resonant converters (SRC) based modular solutions will be reviewed comparatively along with their latest advanced control and protection schemes, practical industry applications are demonstrated, highlighting the versatility and implementation of these converters.
  2) DC/DC converters for MVDC and HVDC interconnection: the novel converter solution that combines the thyristor technology with the MMC will be presented, and the converter is further enhanced for application of all DC offshore wind farms.
  3) DC/DC converters for interconnection of HVDC systems with different voltage levels: techniques and solutions for efficiently managing HVDC voltage and methods to integrate HVDC circuit breaker are explored.
Finally, a summary and outlook are provided. In this tutorial, attendees will gain insights into various converters, their operational techniques and related demonstration projects, supported by simulation and experimental examples.
